Summer TV

I am not a big TV watcher. I have quite the moral dilemma when I sit down to watch TV because I feel that I am wasting time and time is very precious. I keep thinking of all the other things I could be doing... I am usually very relieved when Summer comes around as there is nothing to watch on TV and I am not tempted to sit down and then I don't have the guilt. But there is a show on now that I am totally hooked on. The "Singing Bee". Oh good gosh, right up my alley! I look forward to 9:30 pm Tuesday night. It is hilarious to watch these people belt out these tunes. Some are awful. Some are great. But what is truly hilarious is me sitting on my couch singing along, and then yelling at the TV when these schmucks mess up the songs! My husband truly believes I have lost it. I am offended that some of these people don't know the words to these songs! Truly offened. Come on now! We are talking main stream songs here! And the songs span all ages - late 60's right up to now. I can sing them all. Seems I was given a strange gift - I can memorize anything put to a tune. So even if I HATE the song (and I really REALLY do hate sooooo many....) I can sing along. The tune gets stuck in my head and the words seem to just appear. So hopefully they won't cancel this show. I love it. It amuses me. And I don't feel guilty sitting and watching it. You know why? I see it as an exercise for my brain - having to come up with all those words for all those songs in just half an hour! ha ha That is my story, and I am sticking to it!!

Friday and work

Learned a valuable lesson today: working on Friday during the summer is NOT productive. There is no one around. There is not much to do. Time to go home.

Our hot date night!

This is the pic my mom took of Marc and myself last week from the wedding reception. It was a great night out. I always enjoy getting all dressed up. It is fun. It is very "grown up". Many days, I don't feel like a grown up... Plus I get to pull out my hand bags on these occassions and show them off. Coach was showcased this particular night out. So many bags, so little venues... Hmmm, may have to change that. I see a new rule being established in the Officer household - at least once a month we have to have "Fancy Date Night". I like it!! Will have to see what the big boss says about it?!!

My new floors

Well, here they are. My new floors. I am thrilled with them. And the dark wood with the dark furniture really works well. I found this totally cool shag rug - it is a deep tan colour (not that you can tell from the pic). It is the perfect accent - it adds warmth and a different texture to the room. And I did not want it any bigger. I just wanted it to frame the coffee table. That is all. Mission accomplished.

Weekend Re-Cap

Well, Blogger is being stupid and I can't seem to post any pics... I have a ton of them to upload... It has been like this for a few days now. Hmmm, am I over my limit?? Have they had it with me and my pics?? I may have to look into this.

Anyways, our weekend was insanely busy and extremely productive and I am thrilled with all that we did.

Thursday night: we attended a wedding reception of a totally cute couple who got married in England and then came here for their reception and now are on their way back to England to begin their lives together. She is from here, he is from England. She chose to move to England. Hey, wouldn't you?? It was lovely, and I got some great pics taken of me and Marc. We looked hot!! Need to take these kinds of pics whenever we can!! It is not all that often that I actually look good in a photo!

Friday night: I went out for a girl's night and did not come home until the very wee hours. I expected to be only out a few hours, but nooooo. We started gabbing and gabbing and before I knew it, it was coming on to 1 a.m. and really time for me to get home! But I had a fabulous time with my girlfriends. No kids. No hubbies. No worries. Just food and talk!! Good time.

Saturday morning: Marc decides to pull up the carpet in our living room and does it. We go out and buy our new flooring and get it home. And then Marc begins installing the floor. A LOT OF WORK that he basically did all on his own. He is AMAZING!!! I pulled up the underlay and got rid of all the staples in the sub-floor (OKAY stupid carpet people, could you have used ANY MORE staples???). I swear I pulled out a 1000 staples!! Tedious. But necessary. Marc worked until about 8 pm and then went out to the movies with his buddy Sam who is a life saver and stopped by to check up on Marc and saw he needed a break! Love you Sam!!! Also while Marc worked, I went to a furniture sale held by friends of ours who own a company that import show home quality furniture and art and then sell it at amazing prices. I picked up this gorgeous picture for the main hall on the third floor. It was perfect and I only paid $40 for it!! I know. Total steal!! Hey, if any of you are around Cloverdale next weekend, they are holding another show at the Agriplex off of 176th in downtown Cloverdale. Come. It is WELL worth the trip out here!!!

Sunday: Marc finished the floors. They look gorgeous!! I chose a really dark espresso wood and it looks just amazing. Now we have the finishing work to do, but that will have to wait for another weekend. I think I worked Marc enough for 48 hours!

Today I have a day of cleaning ahead of me. The house is dusty from all that cutting of the floor boards. But this is stuff I like to do. I also think I am going to re-arrange a few things and spruce up the house. Just feel like being creative today around the house.

Have a good day all.

What's a Saturday without a little chaos??

My living room has been turned upside down. We no longer have carpet anywhere on the main level. Marc ripped it all out this morning and we went and bought our new wood floors. Now all my furniture is crammed into my great room and the living room floor and hallway are bare and the wood has to acclimatize. So I will be living in this state of chaos for quite a few days. Ya. It is a project that once you start, you have to go all the way. Marc ripped up a corner of the carpet this morning and by doing that he totally committed himself to continuing until it was all done. It is going to be a very LONG day for Marc... I think I need to leave the house for a little while and just let him work in peace. I am hovering. I am nervous. I hope it will look fabulous once it is all done and back to "normal". Right now, though, I am not too confident. We went with a totally dark wood as opposed to the lighter one we had already in the great room. We could not match it perfectly, so I thougth why bother matching it at all?? And now I am scared I made a mistake. We will see.

I am off to a furniture fair. Just need to walk around and get some inspiration.

Have a good rest of the weekend.

Ciao all.

My day "off"

Really, that is the best oxymoron I have ever heard. A day "off". We are NEVER off. I do not have to go to the firm today, BUT that does not mean that I have a day of lounging ahead. Nooo. I am off to the spa for a haircut (yeah!!) and then out to do errands and then tonight we have a wedding reception to attend. Plus I have bathrooms to clean and laundry to do and I think muffins to bake somewhere in this day...

Tomorow night I am participating in a "girl's night out" party. A bunch of my gal pals are getting together for dinner at our hostess' house and we are bringing appetizers and desserts, while she makes dinner. FABO idea!! I am going to propose making this a club kind of thing and every month rotating houses and spending time together. You know, when you have friends who are positive and lift you up and are fun to be with, you SHOULD be with them!! Life gets too busy all the time. You have to stop and re-evaluate and give your time to others. That really fills your cup!

This weekend ahead is looking pretty busy. We have three goals to accomplish:

1. rip out carpet in living room;
2. buy new flooring; and
3. buy a 2nd vehicle for Marc!!

It has been our ongoing mission these past few weeks. Marc needs a vehicle. We have been a one vehicle family for 13 years. We are done! I have done my bit for kingdom and country and the environment. I have always driven VW cars which are among the BEST for fuel efficiency and low emissions. Sooo, now it is time for this family to get another set of wheels and make life a bit easier on all of us!! And I can stop being the family taxi driver!! Of course, we are looking at buying another VW for Marc. What else would I buy?? I want a BMW, but Marc says they are too picky to maintain. He is probably right. We really need for this 2nd vehicle to be a work horse and be reliable. But I am beyond a snob when it comes to vehicles. I refuse to buy domestic. Marc found the cutest 89 VW Fox. It is fire engine red and in immaculate condition. But no power anything - brakes; steering; windows... It reminds me of the very first VW Golf I bought in 1991. It was a diesel and did not have power anything. It was like driving a tractor all around town. But that car gave me 900 km to a tank (YES!!!) and when I sold it, it had 240,000 km on it and the dealership gave me almost as much for it as I paid for it 6 years earlier! VW = GOOD CAR!! We will see what we can find.

Have a good day all. I have much to do.

My 24 hours of frustration

My gorgeous wall (Marc did an excellent job!!)....

Turned into this... Dark brown chocolate paint on my light beige berber carpet. And yes, I freaked! I freaked out more over this stupid paint spill than I did when I learned Manjit had been murdered, or my grandmother died... The tarp Marc was using to cover the carpet while he painted had some paint on the underside of it. He had NO idea! And when he was done and lifted the tarp, this was left behind. Acutally, it was much worse. This is what is left after using a rug shampooer a few times. Poor guy. I refused to let him eat dinner until he tried to clean up the mess. And then I was even angrier after he was done - not at him, but at myself. HOW PETTY am I??? It was an accident. And yet I made him feel like he had committed a crime. I am ashamed of myself. And you know what, I HATE this carpet to begin with!! The day we moved into our brand new house, the builder came in with his work boots on and left two grease stains on the carpet. He acknowledged that he had made the stains and sent for a carpet cleaner that only made it all worse. So for the last 20 months I have lived with stains in the carpet and they have been the bain of my existence ever since. It has always been our plan to rip it all up and put wood flooring down. I just don't want to spend the money. I want to buy another car... So I was angry that our hand has been forced now (because y'all KNOW I cannot live with this stain on the carpet in MY house!!!) and we have to do the floors. So next weekend we will be buying and installing new wood floors from the entry way, all through our formal living room and hallway and ending at the great room. It is a large area. But, funny enough, it will be cheaper to re-floor that it will be to find an area rug big enough to cover up the spills. I would need a carpet that is 20 feet by 25 feet. Ummm, not very easy to find!! Soooo, new floors it is! My challenge, now, is to decide if I should try to match up with the floors in the great room, or if I should go different all together. I am leaning towards going different. They are completely separate rooms. They serve completely different purposes. They don't need to flow. And this is the advice I have been given by 3 designers I have talked to. I think I will do a very dark wood to compliment my furniture and drapes and then get an area rug just to break it up. And I will only get an area rug big enough to frame the couches and the coffee table.

And finally, my gnocchi disaster. I got in my head to make gnocchi today. I wanted them soooo badly. I got the recipe out and all went well. Until they cooked. Then they fell apart. I was so upset. I guess today was not a day that I would have made my Nonna proud of me... Back to the drawing board.

Have a good night all.
I think I am ready for bed....

Saturday at the Officers' house

What would a Saturday be without me adding more projects to the house! So this morning, by total fluke, we were driving in old Cloverdale and saw a sign for a furniture sale. We stopped by, just for the heck of it. We came home with this coffee table for the living room - only $100!! It is an amazing piece. All solid wood. It has a bit of a middle eastern flair to it with the scroll work around the base of the table top. Not like anything I have in the house. But that is what makes decor so unique - you mix and match pieces that appeal to you, whether or not they "go" with what you have in your house. I am sooo pleased with this find. I have been looking at a similar table at Urban Barn for $565. Very happy I spent 1/5th of that!! Our motto in life is "What is meant to be is". I guess this was meant to be!!

And then I have put Marc to work again. Painting another feature wall in my living room. I am very excited to have this wall done. It will add much needed flair to the formal living room. I will post pics when it is all done.

Have a good weekend all.
Ciao.

Thursday, but no fashion

I am at a loss today of what to talk about re: fashion, so I won't! Sorry.

Yesterday saw heat records broken here in Cloveradale. It reached 38.6 degrees, surpassing the record of 37 degrees back in July 1994! Ya. Okay, I am NOT a summer person in general. I don't like to be sweaty or hot or sticky or stinky! I don't like that feeling of perspiration running down your neck or back or on the side of your face... Just describing this makes me gag. I don't like to be uncomfortable. And I don't like wearing tank tops or short shorts! Totally inapporpriate if you are over the age of 15! Ladies out there sporting this look, please cover up! You aren't young anymore and we don't need to see all your years of wisdom around your middle or your back end or your top end, which is heading further south by the second..... YIKES. And yet this kind of weather makes people think it is apporpriate to go out in public dressed like this. Oh - so maybe I DO have a fashion tip today - COVER UP if you are over the age of 15!!! There ARE great articles of summer clothing out there that can help you stay cool without having to show us all what your momma gave you!!! Anyways, I digress. As I have said before, I live in the Vancouver area because GENERALLY we are a much milder climate all year round! So what is up?? Is this truly the result of the green house effect?? Is global warming causing us to have 40 degree weather?? If so, I am frightened. Very frightened. So it is already 27 degrees here and it is not even 10 am yet. The kids and I are off for a walk to the video store to rent some videos and then huncker down in the basement and watch and stay cool.

If you are out today, remember your hats and sunscreen and sunglasses! Keep hydrated and stay cool!!

More life lessons...

Our friend is ill. Very ill. He is young. Too young to leave this earth. And his family is too young to grow up without him around. I am sure it is not his time yet. Very sure. But still, life is too short to waste! Please take care of yourselves. Please do what makes you happy in life. Please love with all your might and mind. Give everything you have and it will all come back to you, triple fold.

Love you all.

This is what I am looking at buying.
TOOO cute!!
2007 VW Rabbit.

08 July 2007

What have I been up to? Not much. Kind of like it.
Being lazy.
Having bbq's with friends.
Spending time with family.
Watering my plants.
Watering my yard.
Making plans to build a deck.
Thinking about the future. Planning investments. Making changes.
Thinking about buying a new car. A VW Rabbit. Toooo cute.
Thinking about planning a vacation at the end of August for Oregon to sit on the beach with my family.
Being lazy some more.

Fashion Thursday

It is hot outside and the idea of wearing shoes right now is making me gag. So today I am looking at flip-flops. Totally love them for summer. These come from Old Navy. Can't go wrong. Fun colours, fun patterns... This is summer. Have fun today and remember to wear your sunscreen!!

Create...

This is how I feel today. Not very coherent. Not very together. Mish-mashed. Jumbled. My head is spinning with things that need to be done and decisions that have to be made. But I am not focused and I am not clear. This is what came out.

Family BBQ

We had a bbq to celebrate my dad's birthday and my parents' anniversary. They have been married for 37 years. So we got together and ate! Hey, that is what Italians do!! We had lasagna and steak and chicken and lamb and caprese salad and bread and marianted asparagus and mixed green salad. And then we had cherries and strawberries and a napoleon cake! Imagine the pastry, just larger! It was delicious!! And I took pics. Lots and lots of them. Here we go:

Ethan and my crazy nephew Matthew. Can you tell these two are related? They have the same cheezy grin... It is annoying for taking pics, but highly amusing!

My sweet Meli Monster doing what she does best - eating!! She makes us sooo proud!!

My mom teaching Bella how to play bocce. My mom is THE champion! She wins every time. I just can't seem to beat her... She has the perfect touch when it comes to getting the ball close to the pallino. So maybe Isabella will be able to take her place as family champion one day!!

My dad and his kiddies. They all love him to death.

And finally me, eating corn. Okay, let me explain. I have an obsession when I eat corn. I only eat one kernel at a time, and I MUST have a completely clean cob when I am done. I hate bits of corn sticking out of the cob... And I hate bits of corn sticking in my teeth. So if I pick them off one by one, no corn in the teeth and no corn on the cob!! Ya, it takes me like half an hour to eat half an ear of corn, but that is the price I pay for it looking so neat and clean when I am done! ha haaaa Ya, I know. Call the crazy house. I do belong there.

Ciao all.

What I have learned...

Back yard pools and 4 yr olds DON'T mix.

We went to a birthday party last night and they had a pool. Isabella was sooo excited to go into the pool that she did not wait for Marc to go in with her, but rather walked straight in by herself and promptly disappeared. Good thing I was standing right there! I literally walked into the pool fully clothed and yanked her out. She was fine. I was soaked. I did not plan on swimming so I did not bring a change of clothing for myself. For the rest of the evening I wore wet jeans and wet underwear and wet shoes (my GOOD ballerina flats)... Guess we will be starting swimming lessons next week after all.

Happy Canada Day everyone!!
